Frida Kahlo
2006. Played by Salma Hayek in the biopic "Frida" about the famous Mexican artist.
See left for original Frida Kahlo painting this doll is based on.
Teresa
doll has often looked like Salma Hayek to me, and with the EXCELLENT movie Frida, I started thinking. The doll's head is from
a Teresa doll circa 2002. I used the new larger Stacie body off of a 2006 Tapdancing Lila doll to emulate the tiny physique
of Salma and Frida herself. Painted and varnished to look like Salma-Frida complete with unibrow.
The doll has had all
original paint and hair removed. The dark brown katsilk saran doll hair from Restoredoll.com has been rooted specially to
make this hairstlye for Frida, without being too doll-like and bulky. Her hair cannot be taken out of this set, as it is sewn
onto her head. She does not wear the roses with her green hair ribbon in the movie, but they looked so wonderful in the image
I used to paint her face after, I could not resist adding them.
The green outfit that she wears with decorated top and
skirt are made to be as close to Frida's wedding outfit in the movie (and in the real Kahlo's painting). The glass beaded
necklace and gold earrings are handmade to be like the ones that Salma was wearing in the movie. The red shawl is not identical
to the one in the movie, but is very nice looking and has fringe trim on it that took me a long time to make, as I did not
have premade fringe, and had to swipe it out of a stewart plaid tartan piece of scrap material.
The doll has big feet
and wears factory Mattel black Ken shoes. She also has a tiny ever-present cigarette made out of a painted chip cut from the
tip of a toothpick.
I made 2 nearly identical Frida dolls,
this one I had for sale, but later had to pawn. The other one is in my personal collection.
